If the decay or trauma is confined to the crown of the tooth, we’ll usually recommend a pulpotomy. When a cavity gets deep enough to reach the pulp, that tissue becomes irritated and inflamed. We remove the infected material from the pulp chamber, usually on a baby molar, and leave the living tooth root intact. The empty space is filled with dental cement and topped with a stainless steel crown.
Pulpectomy
If the infection involves tissue in both the crown and the root, a pulpectomy is the better option. After numbing the tooth, we remove the pulp and nerve tissue from the crown and from the canals of the roots, then clean and disinfect the pulp chamber and root canals. The tooth and roots are filled with dental cement and finished with a stainless steel crown.

A crown is cemented onto the existing tooth and covers everything above the gum line, becoming the tooth’s new outer surface. Stainless steel dental crowns are a reliable way to protect a primary tooth until the permanent tooth is ready to come in, and placement takes a single appointment. A crowned tooth still needs brushing and flossing like any other.
